Health Insurance Reform Essential for Economic Recovery

As the stock market improves and the unemployment rate decreases, the recession seems to be weakening. However, President Barack Obama has expressed that there is more to be done in order to put an end to the global recession. On Saturday’s weekly radio and internet address, he stated that health insurance reform is the key issue in the Obama presidency and to recovery. “We must do more than rescue our economy from this immediate crisis. We must rebuild it stronger than before”.

The address set out to put to rest the doubts that the American public is having, with concern to the new prospect of cheap health insurance available to everyone, while providing the nation with a glimpse into his plan. “Reform is obviously essential for the 46 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, “he said “[but] it will also provide more stability and security to the hundreds of millions who do”.

Contrary to what many people have been thinking, health insurance reform is not just a way to make health insurance mandatory; it is also a way to ensure each citizen receives adequate care. While many Americans forgo insurance in order to save money, their lack of coverage may cost them more once an emergency illness strikes further down the road. Obama addressed this issue, stating that: “We will require insurance companies to cover routine checkups and preventative care…so we can avoid chronic illnesses that cost too many lives and too much money”.
